Part 1—Luminous Flux, Lux, Luminous Intensity: What Do These Basic Lighting Terms Mean?

Planning kitchen lighting may seem like a simple task at first glance: there should be enough light, we should be able to see the counter clearly, and the end result should be cozy. In practice, however, good lighting is much more complex than that. You need different lighting for food prep, different lighting for cooking, different lighting for washing dishes, and yet another kind to create a pleasant atmosphere in the space in the evening.

Lighting isn’t just about placing lamps. It affects how large a room feels, how much our eyes tire, how well we can see the work surfaces, and what kind of atmosphere the kitchen exudes. To think about it more consciously, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with a few basic concepts.

You don’t need to become a lighting specialist, but it helps to understand what terms like lumen, lux, luminous intensity, and luminous density mean. These concepts help us go beyond simply saying, “Make the light brighter,” and instead see more precisely what is needed.

What is luminous flux?

The unit of measurement for luminous flux is the lumen, abbreviated as lm. Simply put, it indicates how much visible light a light source emits. The higher the lumen value, the more light the light source emits.

In the past, many people chose light bulbs based on wattage because, with traditional incandescent bulbs, we were used to the idea that a higher wattage generally meant brighter light. With modern LED lighting, however, this is no longer so straightforward. Even between two LEDs with the same power consumption, there can be a significant difference in how much light they emit. That’s why lumens are now a much more important metric than wattage alone.

Lumens, then, indicate how much light is emitted by the lamp. However, they do not tell us how this light is distributed throughout the space, or how much of it actually reaches the countertop.

What is illuminance?

The unit of measurement for illuminance is the lux, abbreviated as lx. This indicates how much light reaches a given surface. This is particularly important in kitchen design because we’re not interested in the light emitted by the lamp itself, but rather in how well we can see on the countertop, at the sink, or at the stovetop.

Here’s a simple example: if we spread the same amount of light over a large surface, it feels dimmer on that surface. If, on the other hand, that same light is concentrated on a smaller area, we get brighter illumination there. That’s why the lamp’s placement, direction, beam angle, and the distance to the illuminated surface all matter.

Work surfaces in the kitchen require stronger, more focused lighting than, for example, a hallway or a cozy corner. Lux is therefore one of the most important concepts in terms of actual use.

What is luminous intensity?

The unit of measurement for luminous intensity is the candela, abbreviated as cd. It indicates how strongly a light source emits light in a given direction. This is not just about how much light is produced, but also about the direction and angle at which it is emitted.

Even a light source with a lower luminous flux can appear very bright if it emits light in a narrow, concentrated beam. Consider, for example, a spotlight: it may not produce a huge amount of light overall, but when directed at a specific point, it feels very intense.

In the kitchen, this can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. It’s an advantage when you want to highlight a work surface or a decorative element. It’s a disadvantage when the light is too concentrated, causes glare, or creates strong shadows where even lighting is needed.

What is luminance?

Luminance indicates how bright a surface appears to our eyes. It is measured in candelas per square meter. This is closely tied to how we perceive light—that is, it’s not just about the light source but also about the illuminated surface.

For example, a shiny, reflective countertop behaves differently than a matte surface. The same light appears less intense on a dark, matte surface, while it may seem more intense on a light or shiny surface. That’s why, when designing lighting, you need to consider not only the light fixtures but also the materials of cabinet fronts, countertops, backsplashes, floors, and ceilings.

Furthermore, the perception of light is subjective. Our eyes adapt to the environment, so we perceive the same light differently during the day versus at night, and on light versus dark surfaces.

Why are these concepts important in the kitchen?

In the kitchen, lighting is not merely a matter of ambiance. Here, we use sharp knives, handle hot pots and pans, clean ingredients, and examine colors and textures. This requires adequate, well-directed, and comfortable lighting.

If there isn’t enough light, your eyes tire more quickly, your work becomes less precise, and the kitchen feels gloomier. If the light is too bright or poorly directed, it can be blinding, cause glare, or create distracting shadows. Good lighting, therefore, isn’t simply bright light—it’s well-designed light.

Lumens help you understand how much light a lamp emits. Lux indicates how much light reaches the work surface. Luminous intensity shows how directed the light is. And luminance helps you understand how bright or glaring a given surface appears.
Good lighting is built up in deliberate layers

In a well-designed kitchen, a single central light fixture is rarely enough. You need general lighting to illuminate the space. You need task lighting to illuminate the counter, sink, and cooking area. And in many cases, it’s nice to have mood or accent lighting as well, which makes the kitchen more pleasant to look at in the evening.

Understanding the basics of lighting design is useful because it helps you make more informed decisions. You’ll see not only whether a light fixture is attractive, but also whether it’s truly suitable for the task it’s intended for.

In a kitchen, the lighting is good when you don’t have to pay special attention to it. You simply see well, work comfortably, and the space naturally feels pleasant.
